The New Carlsberg Foundation invites applications for individual research fellowships within the foundation’s scope of activities. Applications must pertain to specific research projects with a certain stipulated duration. Grants are normally given for a duration of 3-12 months, although longer durations may be approved in exceptional cases. The fellowships are full-time, and the recipients will be referred to as New Carlsberg Foundation research fellows. The programme is expected to be continued in the future with annual calls for applications.
The salary is set to match the salary determined in the collective agreement for publicly employed researchers at universities etc. based on the applicant’s seniority and qualification profile. In addition, the funding will cover necessary project-related expenses (such as travel etc.). Costs for a workspace etc. are not covered.
All applicants are required to make their own arrangements concerning attachment to an institution (museum, university or other), which will be responsible for employment and grant administration. The foundation does not require the work to be carried out at the institution in question. The institution receives an overhead of 10% of the total salary cost as stated in the application. If the institution incurs unexpected expenses due to sick leave, maternity/paternity leave or similar circumstances in connection with the employment that exceed the overhead, it may subsequently apply for a reimbursement of these costs. The fellowship application must include the name of the institution that will act as the employer if the application is approved.
The application must include a complete budget based on the applicant’s salary at the expected time of commencement. Regular increases in salary during the fellowship period are to be covered by the overhead.
Applicants must have a PhD degree or will need to document similar research qualifications within the project field, which must lie within the foundation’s scope of activity, in the broadest sense, as defined in the foundation statutes.
The application must include a project description, including a timeline and a statement about the project’s relevance to the professional field (5 pages @ 2500 characters max), a CV (2 pages max), and a summary of the project description (½ page max).
Applications to cover salary costs for scholars who are already employed in positions with research privileges and obligations will normally not be approved.
The foundation’s processing procedure
Applications must be submitted no later than 15 October 2017 for projects scheduled to be initiated from 1 April 2018. The foundation subjects the applications to a screening process with regard to level, relevance and formalities. Applications that fail to meet the screening criteria will be notified promptly. Applications that are approved for further consideration may be submitted for peer review by two independent reviewers.
Based on the outcome of the peer review process, the board of the New Carlsberg Foundation determines whether and for whom to approve fellowship grants.
No explanation is provided when an application is rejected. When an application has undergone peer review, the peer review statement (which is anonymous) will be enclosed for the applicant’s information.
Three months after project completion, at the latest, a report of three pages max describing the course and outcome of the project must be submitted along with a report summary of 800 characters max.
The foundation reserves the right to publish both the project description and the project outcome report, for example, on the foundation’s website.
