Emphasis is placed on ensuring that the content of these publications is current and relevant to contemporary discourse, helping art remain a significant voice in societal debates.

The Foundation strives to ensure that supported publications reflect diversity and breadth in artistic practices, media, perspectives, periods, geography, gender, and art forms.

New Carlsberg Foundation supports both publications that present Danish art in a global perspective and those that introduce international art in Denmark, thereby offering Danish audiences insight into art’s global outlook.

Who can apply?

Museums, art centres, publishers, artists and others who releases publications in Denmark.

Funding for publications on Danish art, to be published outside Denmark, must apply through the programme: International publications on Danish art.

What can be applied for?

All costs associated with producing the publication, such as printing and binding, editing at a publishing house, proofreading, design and image rights. Any grant will only be paid out when the publication has been published.

There are three deadlines in 2026: 30 January, 4 May, 12 October

Application process

  1. An application for support is submitted through the foundation’s online application system.
  2. The Board assesses the applications which are either fully or partially approved- or rejected.
  3. The applicant receives notification of the decision through the application system. 

Criteria

The New Carlsberg Foundation puts emphasis on the following aspects:

  • the publication is original and of high quality.
  • the publication is relevant to the present day in terms of its editorial content, art historical content, and its presentation of the subject matter to a general audience.
  • a well planned distribution strategy, for example through a publishing house, in collaboration with other art institutions, etc.

The application must include

Applications that do not meet the following requirements will not be processed:

  • One PDF file of max. 6 pages
    All application material must be compiled and attached as one single PDF file of max. 6 pages.

The (max.) 6 pages must include:

  • Synopsis – max. 2 pages
    The synopsis should provide an overall overview of the publication’s concept and purpose and, in accordance with the criteria, explain its originality, relevance, timeliness, publisher, and planned distribution.
  • Table of contents – max. 1 page
  • CV/short bio of authors and artists – max. 1 page per author/artist
    If several authors/artists are involved: make a prioritized selection.
  • Illustrations – max. 2 pages
  • Detailed budget and financing plan
    The financing plan must match the budget and show how funds will be secured for the realization of the publication. Include Ny Carlsberg Foundation, but also e.g., self-financing, named foundations that have been or will be applied to, other grants, sponsors, and other income contributing to realization.

The 6 pages may also include:

  • Publisher’s cost estimate and publishing agreement

Reporting

  • It is a condition for publication support that the publication is released no later than two years after the grant date.
  • The grant will only be paid once the publication has been published and received by the New Carlsberg Foundation.
  • After publication, two copies must be sent to the Foundation, and the Foundation may request additional copies as needed.
