Selected grants

Thirteen new research projects are now being realized within the framework of the New Carlsberg Foundation’s Research Initiative, which aims to promote art research in Denmark and enhance research cooperation among Danish museums and universities.

Malmö Konstmuseum (Malmö Art Museum) expands its collection with several significant pieces by Danish contemporary artists. The purchase was supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Cathrine Raben Davidsen has created a series of unique ceramic pieces in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen. The series draws on references to religious traditions and the relationship between humanity and nature. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark now adds six pieces from the series to its collection.

The Hirschsprung Collection has purchased two pieces by the artist Bertha Wegmann with support from Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond, the Augustinus Foundation and the New Carlsberg Foundation. One is a portrait of the artist’s student, the young painter Marie Triepcke, who went on to earn acclaim in her own right under her married name, Marie Krøyer. The painting hammered at over DKK 3 million, the highest auction price ever for a piece by a female artist in Denmark.

Elmgreen & Dragset’s art installation The Future, which was shown at the solo exhibition ‘Powerless Structures’ at Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2016 is now being included in the museum’s permanent collection with funding from the British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel and the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Jesper Christiansen’s landscape paintings from the area of Odsherred are lavishly detailed. Incorporating references to literature, music and the changing seasons, they portray the countryside around his home in western Zealand. With funding from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Odsherred Art Museum can now include several pieces by Christiansen in its collection.

Niels Lergaard’s large painting Familien, Oplysning, Forskning, Poesien (Family, Enlightenment, Science, Poetry), which was originally donated to the teacher’s college Haderslev Statsseminarium by the New Carlsberg Foundation in 1955, was in need of repair after years of wear and tear. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation the painting now appears revitalized after much-needed restoration by conservators from the National Museum of Denmark.

A giant glass eye in a multicoloured mosaic now watches over the new district Kanalbyen (Canal City) in the Danish city of Fredericia. The eye and the accompanying elements of plants and trickling water make up Kirstine Roepstorff’s art installation HYDRA, which is an integrated part of the multistorey car park of the same name.

Tension-filled painting by the Funen painter Fritz Syberg finds a new home at Faaborg Museum, where it strikes up a dialogue with another of Syberg’s principal works in the museum’s collection. The purchase was supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation.

John Kørner’s artistic practice revolves around current issues in society, and his painting Mountain Shopping is no exception. Here, Kørner critically addresses the climate imprint of our daily shopping. Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg now adds the piece to its collection of Danish contemporary art with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Playful works of art by Nanna Abell and Jeppe Hein have taken up occupancy in the modern architectural setting of University College Copenhagen, Campus Carlsberg. With bright signal colours, B-LOONY and Mirror Balloons add both visual and sensuous statements to the open concrete spaces.

Harald Giersing had close ties to the early 20th-century artists’ colony in Faaborg on the Danish island of Funen. His portrait of the art historian Leo Swane in military uniform is an important and well-known piece in Danish art history. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Faaborg Museum can now add the painting to its collection.

A deeply personal painting by P. S. Krøyer now finds a permanent home at the Art Museums of Skagen. The painting of the artist’s young daughter hung in his own home in Skagen until his death. In private ownership since then, it was recently secured at auction with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

SMK – National Gallery of Denmark adds a beautiful video installation about migration, war and identity by Eva Koch to its collection. The installation, VILLAR, draws on the artist’s own family story but is equally a universal story about families torn apart and uprooted by war. The New Carlsberg Foundation supported the purchase.

Tal R moves effortless among different media and has recently moved into sculpture in the classical materials of bronze and plaster. With funding from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the disquieting bronze sculpture Headless Drummer Boy can now stagger into the permanent collection of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

Per Bak Jensen captures and preserves moments in time, creating a state outside time in his photographic art. His three photographs Gensyn, Figur and Spir (Appearance, Figure and Spire) from 2015 are atmospheric images that are open to interpretation. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, The Art Museum in Tønder can now add the three pictures to its collection.
