Therefore, support is provided for research trips for art history scholars, museum professionals and curators in connection with their research and exhibition-related work.
Likewise, support is given for art history conferences in Denmark, as well as joint study trips for students at Danish art academies.
Who can apply?
- Individual researchers and art professionals can apply for support for specific research trips, including archive and collection visits outside Denmark, participation in conferences and seminars abroad, artist visits outside Denmark, and relevant networking research activities outside Denmark. Preference is given to applicants with institutional affiliation.
- Researchers can also apply for support to organise art history conferences in Denmark with participation from international researchers.
- Danish art academies can apply for support for joint study trips for students enrolled in the visual arts programmes at the academies.
What can be applied for?
- Travel and accommodation expenses
- Costs associated with participation in art history conferences outside Denmark
- Costs associated with hosting art history conferences in Denmark
- Joint study trips for students at Danish art academies in the visual arts programmes
Support is not provided for:
- Per diems, meals, and petty acquisitions
- Artists’ research activities
- Individual student trips
- Trips related to preparing a PhD application
- Trips undertaken before the application deadline
Applications for trips starting during the processing period – i.e., after the application deadline but before receiving a response – may potentially be approved

Application process
- Applications for support must be submitted through the foundation’s online application system.
- The New Carlsberg Foundation assesses the applications and either grants partial or full support - or declines the application.
- Applicants receive a response through the foundation’s online application system.
Criteria
The New Carlsberg Foundation emphasises that:
- The research trip, study trip or conference maintains a high level of professionalism and competence and is relevant to the applicant’s work or field of study.
- The research trip, study trip or conference contributes to the internationalisation of research and expertise on art in Denmark.
- The applicant is affiliated with an institution (university, museum, art centre or similar) that administers the grant, including salary payments. Occasionally, applicants without institutional affiliation may also be supported
Financial framework
- Individual trips can receive a maximum of DKK 50,000.
- Joint study trips can receive a maximum of DKK 125,000.
- Art-related conferences in Denmark can receive a maximum of DKK 75,000
The application must contain:
Applications that do not meet the following requirements will not be processed:
- In the online application system, applicants must enter a brief project description of no more than 2,400 characters, including spaces. The project description must explain the artistic or art‑research content of the trip or conference and demonstrate its relevance to the applicant’s research, professional practice, or field of study. It must also include reflections on the anticipated impact of the trip or conference on relevant art‑research environments in Denmark.
Furthermore a PDF file of max. 5 pages must be attached. The (max.) 5 pages must include:
- Applicant’s CV – max. 1 page. For applications for joint study trips by art academies, this may be omitted.
- Formal confirmation from the applicant’s affiliated institution (university, museum, art centre or similar). Alternatively, an explanation of why this cannot be included.
- Detailed budget and financing plan, including information on co-financing and any applied/granted foundation support.
The (max.) 5 pages may also include:
- Any agreement on conference contribution or other type of invitation.
