Sianne Ngai, professor at the University of Chicago, is one of the leading scholars in the field of aesthetic theory. On Thursday, 20 May, her most outstanding work, Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting is released in Danish, titled Vores Æstetiske Kategorier. The release is marked with an event at SMK – National Gallery of Denmark, which includes a live interview with the author.

Sick girls in Nordic art

New exhibition with portrayals of sick girls in Nordic art opened recently at the Art Museums of Skagen. It is based on a research project involving the Art Museums of Skagen, the Hirschsprung Collection and Aarhus University. The New Carlsberg Foundation has supported both the exhibition publication and the research project.

Summer landscape to Viborg

A lovely landscape study painted by P. C. Skovgaard during a summer sojourn in Vejby in northern Zealand has now been added to the collection of the Skovgaard Museum in Viborg. The study demonstrates that Skovgaard’s mastery of intimate, small-scale portrayals of nature was equal to his grasp of large, monumental compositions. The purchase was made possible by support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Olafur Eliasson transforms Fondation Beyeler

Olafur Eliasson Fondation Beyeler

Olafur Eliasson recently transformed Fondation Beyeler into a microcosm, and we are invited in. Along with ducks, flowers and other organisms we become participants in a unique spatial and sensory universe as we experience the installation and its interplay with the museum’s architecture and natural surroundings. The New Carlsberg Foundation has supported the development of the digital platform of this solo exhibition.

Atmospheric whirls

Julie Mehretu  First Seal (R 6:1)

Julie Mehretu’s works leave a sense that the meaning hangs in the air, evading clear-cut statements. Thanks to a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark now adds four prints from the series Slouching Towards Bethlehem to its collection.

Very different artworks by Mette Vangsgaard and Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat are now being included in the collection at Vejen Art Museum. The acquisition of contemporary Danish art and 120-year-old French ceramics was made possible by support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Amalie Jakobsen Suffocating Air, 2020

With the piece Suffocating Air, Amalie Jakobsen pushes the abstract tradition in new directions while also highlighting the ecological and climate challenges we face. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art has included the sculpture in its collection.

Stig Brøgger – returning to Nevada

Stig Brøgger. Mutations (Bushes, Nevada), 1969

Shortly before Stig Brøgger’s recent and sudden death, the Nevada Museum of Art acquired several works of art by the Danish artist. These pieces, which were a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation, are included in no less than two exhibitions at the museum this year.

A well-rolled cigar at Kofoeds Skole

Randi & Katrine Kofoeds Cigar, 2021

Kofoeds Skole (Kofoed’s School), an independent school on Amager in Copenhagen for people who are socially marginalized, has a new smoking space that is also a work of art. Or is it the other way round? The artist duo Randi & Katrine have created Copenhagen’s most beautiful outdoor smoking space, which has been realized thanks to a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Danish ceramics in Paris

Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen. Female with Tweed Fez, 2020

Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen and Michael Geertsen each have their own unique approach to the clay, but they both challenge and renew the medium of ceramics. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Musée des Arts Décoratifs now adds a number of works by the two artists to its collection.

The Roaring Twenties come to Øregaard Museum

Copenhagen was a popular topic during the early 20th century, when many artists portrayed it as the Paris of the North. Among them was the Danish modernist Svend Johansen, who introduced a new, grandiose style in his interpretations of the city from the 1920s. Now, one of his principal paintings, from 1926, is added to Øregaard Museum’s collection thanks to a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation.
