Nature and Ekelund

Poul Ekelund Både på stranden, 1965

Poul Ekelund grew up in Copenhagen but ended up in Vendsyssel in North Jutland – far away from the city, in the middle of nature. Similarly, two of his paintings have now moved from the New Carlsberg Foundation in Copenhagen to Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum (Vendsyssel Art Museum). Høstlandskab (Harvest Landscape) and Både på stranden (Boats on the Beach) are currently shown in the new special exhibition ‘Poul Ekelund: Living creature – Living landscape’. The exhibition is accompanied by a research anthology about Ekelund that also received support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Ring to Ribe

L. A. Ring Sommerdag på Enø. En mark med modent korn i forgrunden, 1913.

With chiselled clarity and crisp colours, L. A. Ring portrays summer living on the Danish island of Enø. The only boundary between the contrasting colours of ripe corn and the clear blue sky is a narrow strip of sea and the family’s cherished summer carriage, which allowed Ring to immerse himself in the landscapes he painted. Now, the public can see the bright landscape painting at Ribe Art Museum, which recently acquired it at auction with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.
