Application deadline: 18 September 2020
1. PhD fellowships
An art museum/exhibition venue (possibly several applying together; in special cases, museums of cultural history may also apply) can apply to the foundation for a project.
The application must include a description (one standard page max.: 2,400 keystrokes incl. spaces) of the project’s field of study, its relevance to the museum and a reference to a preliminary agreement with a university for employment/doctoral training, including a plan for the remaining funding. The university will subsequently announce the vacancy and serve as the place of employment.
The New Carlsberg Foundation co-funds each PhD fellowship with a grant of DKK 1.5 million. This amount is fixed, regardless of fellowship type (3+5, 4+4, 5+3) and the course of the fellowship otherwise. Applicants may apply for additional funding to cover costs related to maternity/paternity leave.
2. Postdoc fellowships
An art museum/exhibition venue (possibly several acting as a group; in special cases museums of cultural history may apply) can apply to the foundation for a standard three-year postdoc project.
The application must include a description (one standard page max.) of the project’s field of study, its relevance to the museum and a reference to a preliminary agreement with a university for employment. The university will subsequently announce the vacancy and serve as the place of employment.
The New Carlsberg Foundation co-funds each position with a grant of DKK 1.8 million over three years.
Any remaining funding and additional, related costs are covered by the universities and museums participating in the individual project. Applicants may, however, apply for additional funding to cover costs related to maternity/paternity leave.
For PhD and postdoc fellowships, museum-relevant fields of study include issues related to the arts in the broadest sense that are relevant for the activities of the museum or museums behind the application. This may include more traditional art history/art theory research in relation to collections and so forth as well as other issues related to the activities of the museum(s) in society: strategy, curation, marketing, communication/education and so forth.
3. Individual project funding
Funding is available for research projects of, normally, 3–12 months’ duration that fall within the scope of the foundation’s work. Applicants must arrange for affiliation with an institution (museum, university or other) that will be in charge of the employment and of the management of the fellowship. Applicants must have a PhD degree or document similar research qualifications.
If salary is included in the budget, this will be set at the standard salary in accordance with the collective agreement for publicly employed researchers at universities and so forth with the same seniority and a comparable qualification profile. Further, the budget may include any necessary project-related costs (e.g., travel costs and similar). Costs for a work station/work space and so forth are not covered. The foundation does not require the work to be carried out at the institution in question.
The application must include a project description and a statement of the project’s relevance for the professional field (5 standard pages max.), a CV (2 standard pages max.) and a summary of the project description (½ standard page max.). It must also include a timeline for the project. Applications for salary replacement (‘frikøb’) for fellows who are already employed in positions with research privileges and obligations will normally not be approved.
The institution receives an overhead of 10% of the total salary cost as stated in the application. If the institution incurs unexpected expenses due to sick leave, maternity/paternity leave or similar circumstances in connection with the employment that exceed the overhead, it may subsequently apply for a reimbursement of these costs.
Applications that do not meet the formal requirements will be declined. Please note that a standard page is 2,400 keystrokes incl. spaces.
The employees will be referred to as New Carlsberg Foundation fellows.
Processing procedure
The foundation’s board subjects the applications and project descriptions to a screening process with regard to level, relevance and formal aspects. Applicants will be notified promptly if their application does not meet the screening criteria. Applications that are approved for further consideration will be submitted for peer review by two independent reviewers. Based on the outcome of the board’s review and the peer review, the board of the New Carlsberg Foundation determines whether and for whom to approve research grants. No explanation is provided when an application is declined.
Applications should be submitted online via the New Carlsberg Foundation’s application system: ansoegning.ncf.dk
