The British-Japanese artist Simon Fujiwara creates thought-provoking and complex total installations that examine our current focus on identity, honesty and self-representation. On of the artist’s principal works is now being added to ARKEN’s collection, based on a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Large donation enhances SMK’s collection and supports Danish contemporary art

The New Carlsberg Foundation is donating a significant amount to enable the purchase of more than 100 new pieces to the collection at SMK – the National Gallery of Denmark. With this donation, SMK aims to increase the focus on Danish contemporary art and engage in an ambitious effort to buy works by Danish artists and artists who are active in Denmark. The donation thus also provides economic assistance to the Danish art scene, which is hard hit by the coronavirus crisis.

Jake and Dinos Chapman on Goya

Jake & Dinos Chapman Grande hazaña! Con muertos!, 2019

The artist brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman not only address one of the most impactful portrayals of violence in art history, they intervene directly in it. They have given the iconic painter Goya a make-over in their lithographic series Grande hazaña! Con muertos! The New Carlsberg Foundation has now donated the series to Esbjerg Art Museum, which presents it in a new exhibition that opens on 9 June.

BLOX – now with a giant slide

When the Danish Architecture Center (DAC) recently reopened, it also revealed a sensational new installation, made possible by a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation. In a bespoke commission for DAC, the internationally acclaimed artist Carsten Höller has created one of his intricate slides, spiralling four storeys down through the iconic BLOX building.

Monumental tapestries for the folk high school Løgumkloster Højskole

After being shuttered for several years, Løgumkloster Højskole (Løgumkloster Folk High School) is once again ready to welcome students and staff. The lecture hall in the newly reopened school now features four large woven tapestries created by Maja Lisa Engelhardt with funding from the New Carlsberg Foundation. By the time the tapestries were completed, however, the school had to declare bankruptcy, and so the work of art has only recently been hung in its intended setting.

Simple and evocative

Roman Ondak Kunsten

Thanks to a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg recently added Event Horizon by the internationally acclaimed Slovakian artist Roman Ondak to its collection. Ondak’s piece is at once strikingly simple and complex in its profoundly sensuous way of giving the past renewed currency in the present.

The Hirschsprung Collection shows Wegmann

The Hirschsprung Collection has acquired a beautiful still life by Bertha Wegmann. The painting, which is already on display at the museum is a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Toilet transformation at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft

When Glasmuseet Ebeltoft (the Glass Museum Ebeltoft) reopens on Wednesday, 27 May, visitors can expect a significantly different experience … at the toilet. Glass artist Steffen Dam has created a site-specific total installation in one of the museum’s public toilets. The piece has been realized thanks to a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation and is now going to be a permanent part of the museum.

Adam Jeppesen for Brandts

Adam Jeppesen. The Pond

There is an ethereal, almost metaphysical quality to Adam Jeppesen’s work. In his series The Pond the artist works with cyanotype, a method that relies on chemical processes and sunlight and challenges the photographic techniques. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Danish art museum Kunstmuseum Brandts now adds four pieces from the series to its collection.

Trine Søndergaard 148 Works

Trine Søndergaard Göteborg Kunstmuseum

The exhibition Trine Søndergaard 148 Works at Gothenburg Museum of Art is the Danish art photographer’s first solo exhibition at a Swedish museum. The exhibition presents photographs from 2005–2020 and is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue published with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Skagen Painters in a new light

The art museum Ribe Kunstmuseum has added two pieces by, respectively, Viggo Johansen and Michael Ancher to its collection of Danish art. The paintings reveal new sides of the two artists, who were both among the so-called Skagen Painters and also, each in their way, relates to the wives of the two friends. The acquisitions were made possible by grants from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Danish art photography to Lausanne

Nicolai Howalt. Elements, 2016

Nicolai Howalt works with photography in a conceptual and highly experimental approach. In his two series Elements and Silver Migration he examines the possibilities and limitations of photography in physical materials. With funding from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Musée de l’Elysée now adds 26 pieces from the two series to its collection.
