Until 23 September, one of France’s biggest museums of modern art presents a large retrospective exhibition about the Danish artist Sonja Ferlov Mancoba. In addition to funding the exhibition catalogue, the New Carlsberg Foundation recently donated one of Ferlov Mancoba’s principal works to the Parisian museum.

On 11 July, a large solo exhibition with the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson opens at Tate Modern in London. The exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s works in England to date. The New Carlsberg Foundation has funded the exhibition catalogue.

Based on a grant of DKK 18 million from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the University of Copenhagen now establishes a research centre to study the social communities that emerge around art. The new centre, which opens in January 2020 under the leadership of Professor Frederik Tygstrup, is named Forum: Art and Communality. It is the biggest and most focused Danish research initiative to date dedicated to the value of art for society.

The Hirschsprung Collection has acquired Vilhelm Hammershøi’s Selvportæt (Self-Portrait), painted in Paris in 1891.

For many years, the Danish Church in Paris has wanted to install an altarpiece in the bright rectangular church space. With a grant from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Jesper Christiansen has now created a vertical altarpiece in two sections that draws on imagery from the stories about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. In rich detailing, Christiansen has created a large vertical landscape that invites the viewer to go exploring.

The Danish artist group SUPERFLEX marks the anniversary of the symbolic summit between North and South Korea with a playground installation in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the Korean nations. The installation, which was opened in connection with the Danish Crown Prince Couple’s official visit to South Korea, was realized with support from the Ministries of Culture in South Korea and Denmark and from the New Carlsberg Foundation.

Principal work by Poul Gernes to represent Danish post-war art in the United States. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., adds the important piece to its collection.

A new-build ruin? That may sound like a contradiction in terms. Nevertheless, that is what the visual artist FOS has created for the upper-secondary school Vestfyns Gymnasium in the town of Glamsbjerg. Based on a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation, FOS has created Aur(0)a, a work of art that is both humorous and monumental.

KØS museum of art in public spaces is expanding its collection of building-related art. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation the museum has acquired an extensive collection of studies and sketches underlying six innovative decorative projects for hospitals.

When the retrospective exhibition of Sonja Ferlov Mancoba’s art at SMK – National Gallery of Denmark closes in mid May, a group of works will remain at the museum. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation SMK adds four monumental plaster sculptures and four drawings to its collection.

Erik A. Frandsen’s work Untitled (Haiti) contains references to art history but also suggests a future path in the artist’s multifaceted oeuvre. With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Horsens Art Museum has now acquired the mosaic for its collection.

In a large exhibition at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, Austria, Asger Jorn’s graphic works are presented to the public outside Denmark for the first time. The New Carlsberg Foundation has funded the catalogue for the comprehensive exhibition.

Eugène Leroy’s paintings consist of so many layers of oil paint that the image almost disappears. With a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Louisiana now acquires one of the artist’s most significant works.

The special exhibition ‘Perfect Poses?’ is a sculptural tour of ‘the long 19th century’. The exhibition, which opens on 1 March, presents French sculptures from a new angle, focusing on their poses. The New Carlsberg Foundation has funded the exhibition catalogue.

The sports-themed continuation school Haslev Idrætsefterskole now offers an insight into pictorial artist Erik Steffensen’s artistic work. Like windows to the world outside, four large photographic works and a two-sided stage curtain in the school’s renovated lecture hall.

Tacita Dean’s dramatic photogravure Quarantania has an intense visual presence. The New Carlsberg Foundation has secured this important work of art by the British artist for Louisiana Museum of Modern Art north of Copenhagen. The photogravure demonstrates Dean’s persistent interest in our recollection of the past and its impact on the presence.
